Head Transplant

The first ‘successful’ head transplant was carried out in 1963 by Robert J. White of Cleveland, Ohio, who attached the head of one monkey to the body of another. The monkey survived for several days, during which it tried to bite the experimenters.

A Rat's Pumping Heart

Scientists have grown a functioning heart!

★ While they have only tested it on rats, this is still a huge discovery in the science community. 

★ Thousands of people every year are put on organ transplant lists and they often die before they can receive a new organ.

★ Luckily, researchers from the University of Minnesota might have found a solution. They've grown a heart using stem cells!

★ But how was the heart grown? First, the heart was removed from a dead rat and its cells were washed out with detergent, leaving the heart’s “framework”. 

★ Next, scientists injected new heart cells from newborn rats into the heart frame.
