Glory Drain Hole

1- It is called "GLORY DRAIN HOLE" Glory holes are used for dams to drain excess water during dry seasons.

2- This one is the largest in the world, it is located in Lake Berryessa.

3- It is used very rarely, but it is quite a sight to see it being put to use. 

4- Located in Napa County, California, USA this glory hole was constructed between 1953 and 1957. 

5- The hole diameter is 72ft (22m) wide whilst the critical drop is 280ft (86m).

1- The River Nile is in Africa. It originates in Burundi, south of the equator, and flows northward through northeastern Africa, eventually flowing through Egypt and finally draining into the Mediterranean Sea.

2- Nile is the longest river on Earth! It is 4,157 miles (6,690 km) long.

3- The Nile and its tributaries flow though nine countries. 

a) The White Nile flows though Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt. 

b) The Blue Nile starts in Ethiopia. Zaire, Kenya, Tanzanian, Rwanda, and Burundi all have tributaries, which flow into the Nile or into lake Victoria Nyanes.

4- The Nile gets its name from the Greek word "Nelios", meaning River Valley.

5- Unlike most other rivers, The Nile River flows north as opposed to flowing south.

6- The Nile River has huge significance in regards to Ancient Egypt. Most of Ancient Egypt’s historical sites are located along the banks of the Nile River including cities such as Luxor and Cairo.

7- In 2004, the White Nile Expedition became the first to navigate the entire length of the Nile River. The expedition began in Uganda and finished in Rosetta, taking four months and two weeks to complete.

8- The Nile Delta in Northern Egypt is where the Nile River drains in to the Mediterranean Sea. It is around 160 kilometres (100 miles) in length and spreads out over 240 kilometres (149 miles) of coastline. It is rich in agriculture and has been farmed for thousands of years.

9- Around 40 million people (half of Egypt’s population) live in the Nile Delta region.

10- In 1787, the famous Rosetta stone was found in the Nile Delta in the city of Rosetta. This Ancient Egyptian artifact played a key role in modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphics.

11- The Aswan High Dam(first dam built on the Nile) was built in 1970 to help regulate flooding of the Nile River. Before the Aswan Dam was built, years that featured high levels of water could wipe out crops while years of low level water could produce famines and drought. The dam helps control these water levels.

The Ocean Glows


★ Everyone used to think sailors had drunk too much rum when they talked about the ocean glowing at night.

★ Now satellite pictures have shown that large patches of the Indian Ocean may glow two or three nights in a row.

★ Scientists suspect the cause is giant colonies of luminous bacteria, which sometimes light up waves like this one.

The Earth is known as the Blue Planet because nearly three-quarters of its surface is covered with water.

★ Dissolved in every cubic kilometre of seawater is about 6 Kg of Gold. The ocean contains more than 1 billion cubic kilometres of water, which means there are 6 million tonnes of gold in the Earth's oceans !

Volcano Underwater

★ Recent studies suggest the Atlantic was like a steaming hot tub between 100 and 84 million years ago, with temp. that ranged between 33°C and 42°C.

★ The oceans are a hotbed of volcanic activity. In fact, 90 per-cent of all volcanoes are under the sea. The world's biggest concentration of active volcanoes is in the South Pacific, where there are over 1100 active volcanoes.

★ The world's tallest mountain is actually in the sea. It's the volcanic island Mauna Kea in Hawaii, and is 10,200 metres tall from the ocean floor to the summit. The reason why people call "Mount Everest" the tallest is that Mauna Kea is much under water; standing 4,205 m (13,796 ft) above sea level but when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is over 10,000 m (33,000 ft) tall—significantly taller than Mount Everest(8,848 m).

Mauna Kea

★ The longest mountain range is the Mid-Ocean Ridge, which stretches 74,000 kilometres, more than four times the lengths of the Himalayas combined.

★ If the Ocean's total salt dried, it would cover all land on the Earth to a depth of 2 metres.

★ Rip currents are the ocean's biggest killer of humans. They happen when the sea is twisted as waves break differently on different parts of the shore.

★ Under the Denmark Striat, a waterfall slowly cascades downward for over 3 kilometres —over three times as far as Angel Falls, in Venzuela, which is the tallest land waterfall.

★ For years, scientist wondered what creatures on the sae floor ate. The puzzle recently solved by the discovery of snot-like "stinkers" made by tiny tadpole —like creatures, which double the available food.

★ Some microbes can feed entirely on chemicals spewed up by seafloor volcanoes. They provide food for other deep sea creatures, such as giant clams.

Dolphin Island

★ There are so many stunning landscapes on Earth, yet nature never ceases to amaze. 

★ When viewed from above, you might imagine the shape of islands to be random too, but a look at the following images may make you think again.
