Dust Mites

Size: 1/75"
Shape: Flat, broad, oval
Color: Off white to tan
Legs: 8
Wings: No
Antenna: No

Common Name: Dust Mite
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Arachnida
Order: Acariformes
Family: Pyroglyphidae
Species: Dermatophagoides farinae

DIET
Dust Mites primarily feed on dead skin shed by humans and other animals. They can also absorb moisture from the air.

HABITAT
Dust Mites are most often found in beds. They may also be found living in carpet, furniture, and clothing.

IMPACT
Dust Mites are harmless to most people. They carry small foreign proteins, often referred to as "allergens". They don't carry diseases, but these proteins can cause allergic reactions in people by triggering the immune system to over react.

PREVENTION
1) Change your sheets often.
2) Vacuum frequently.
3) High-temperature cleaning.
4) If Dust Mites are a real problem in your home, call a pest management professional.

1- The weight of the average mattress doubles after ten years due to dust mite infestation, and the weight of the average pillow increases 10% after one year.

2- In addition, your bed can be home to more than ten million mites and can hold over two and a half billion droppings.

3- A gram of dust in a house can hol
d over a thousand mites.

4- Many people are allergic to dust and, therefore, to dust mites.

5- If you often wake up with congestion, a runny nose, watery eyes, itching, or sneezing, then you are probably allergic to dust mites.

6- A strict cleaning regimen is one of the only ways to cut down on the number of mites in your home.

7- Dust mites live an average of three months.

8- They are a member of the arachnid (spider) family. A single mite is the one-tenth the size of the width of a single human hair.

9- Dust mites live in mattresses, pillows, blankets, and other soft, comfortable items.
They dislike hard surfaces.

10- One of the only ways to really get rid of dust mites is through high-temperature cleaning.

World's No # 1 Deadliest Animal — "A Mosquito"

Although there are many discrepancies as to the top 10 most dangerous animals, the number one spot unanimously goes to the mosquito.

The deadliest creature on earth, the anopheles mosquito, is responsible for more than 300 million cases of malaria each year, and causes between 2-3 million deaths per year. The 3,000 species of mosquito, including some 200 in North America, do not all carry the same diseases. It can be found pretty much anywhere and spreads a multitude of sicknesses such as dengue and yellow fevers, encephalitis, elephantiasis, canine heartworm and West Nile virus.

In my opinion mosquitoes suck !

★ Majority of the cockroach's favourite food is glue on the envelopes, glue bindings at the backs of books and the glue on the back of postage stamps.

★ Here the word "majority" is used because with some 3500 varieties of cockroaches 95 % make up 5 types - Asian, American, brown, banded, and Japanese;there is not really one food that universally can be a choice.

Cockroach Racing

U might have heard of car racing , motor-bike racing or even cycle racing but what about "Roach racing" :O ?

—Cockroach Racing
The Story Bridge Hotel Cockroach Races started in 1982 when two old punters sat in the bar arguing over which suburb had the biggest and fastest roaches. They decided to race some roaches the next day and tested their alcohol-fuelled convictions in a parking garage, the bar crowd enjoyed it and thus the races were born.
At the Story Bridge Hotel in Brisbane they've been racing the insects every hot summery January 26 for the past 29 years.

┗▶ Race Rules
Racing is simple....the races are held in a circular track and roaches are then let go from an upturned bucket in the middle...first to the edge is a winner. Sometimes, things are made a little more difficult in the steeplechase events where a circular fence (garden hose) is used to enhance the spectacle and test the roach talent.
It is the job of the stewards to catch the first 3 cockies across the line. Their decision is final.
Only stewards are permitted on 'The Olde Canvasse'. Pitch invaders are liable to a $100,000,000.00 fine.

┗▶ Betting and Winners
There is no betting as such on the races . Instead entrants pay $5 to buy a roach and $5 to enter it or their own in a race.....all roaches are numbered (which is a very tough job), with first second and third receiving prizes..First gets a pack from the race sponsor and a trophy, second gets $25.00 cash prize and third get a $15.00 cash prize!!
Scientifically bred Cockroaches (of the highest calibre) can be purchased from the Stewards.

Firefly

Only male fireflies can fly— female fireflies often can't because their wings are too short.

The female firefly perches itself on a bush or a rock and waits. When a male passes by with a signal the female recognizes, the female flashes back the same signal. The male lands and touches the female's antennae. This is how fireflies smell each other. If the female smells right to him, the two fireflies will mate. Unlike natural and human-made light, fireflies' light gives off no heat - it's called bioluminescence.

┗▶ This is also one of the phenomenons where you get light without heat !

┗▶ Frogs sometimes eat enough fireflies, that they themselves start glowing.

Busy Bee !

┗▶ A bee must tap two million flowers to make one pound of honey

┗▶ A Honey bee travels an estimated 43,000 miles to gather 1 pound of honey !
a pound of honey consists of about 29,180 drops

┗▶ It is the only insect that produces food eaten by man . . .

┗▶ A hive of bees will fly 90,000 miles, the equivalent of three orbits around the earth to collect 1 kg of honey.

┗▶ It takes one ounce of honey to fuel a bee's flight around the world.
Now, that's a real HARD WORK !
