The Whale Galaxy

★ Swimming into view from 25million light years away, the Whale Galaxy.

★  Nasa scientists have released this stunning picture of the aptly titled Whale Galaxy. They were amazed by the galaxy's likeness to the mammal. Its colours stretching across the inky blackness of outer space this curiously shaped galaxy has been sighted 25 million light years away.

★ Its technical name from Nasa researchers is NGC 463 but others have likened it to the Cosmic Herring or The Whale Galaxy.

★ In this gorgeous colour image, the galaxy's yellowish core, dark dust clouds, bright blue star clusters, and red star forming regions glow brightly. It is also known to have spouted a halo of hot gas at one point.

Black Holes

1- There are currently 14 known black holes.

2- Astronomers think that at least one black hole is born every day.

3- The closest known black hole to Earth is Cygnus X-1, which is located about 8000 light years away.

4- There is a black hole at the centre of our own Milky way Galaxy, around which the solar system revolves. It is named Sagittarius A*

The Black Eye or Evil Eye galaxy gets its nicknames from the band of light-absorbing dust that appears in front of the star system's bright center in this Hubble Space Telescope image. Messier 64, as the Black Eye galaxy is more formally known, is thought to have taken on its ominous appearance after it collided with another galaxy perhaps a billion years ago.

This image of the Whirlpool galaxy shows the classic features of a spiral galaxy: curving outer arms where newborn stars reside and a yellowish central core, home to older stars. A companion galaxy called NGC 5195, seen here at the tip of one of Whirlpool's arms (right), has been passing by for hundreds of millions of years and exerting gravitational forces on its larger neighbor.

This false-color view of the Cartwheel galaxy was created by combining images captured by four space telescopes: Galaxy Evolution Explorer, Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Chandra X-ray Observatory. Astronomers think a smaller galaxy, possibly one of two galaxies seen here (bottom left), passed through the center of the Cartwheel galaxy about 100 million years ago.

Double sunsets on a distant world

Double sunsets on a distant world

1- If you were stranded on a recently discovered planet called Kepler-16b and looked up during the day, you’d see an unusual light show: two glowing orbs making their way across the sky.

2- Yes ! somewhere deep in the Universe, scientists have found for the first time a planet orbiting two stars (binary stars is what we call them).

3- If you were on that planet, there would be two sunsets and two sunrises, one for each star the planet orbits

4- And those two stars also orbit each other, which means they’d appear to change position in the sky.

5- You’d get a different sunset every day!

6- The two stars are locked together by gravity in a binary, or double, star system.

7- Scientists say “Now that we know how to find them, what they look like, and the things to look for, we’re probably going to find a few more,”

8- Since then, scientists have discovered hundreds, possibly thousands, of planets outside our solar system.

9- Kepler-16b is about the size of Saturn, and a year on Kepler-16b lasts about 226 days on Earth.

10- Its two host stars are small, and if you smooshed them together, they’d still have less heft than the sun.

Pluto

Discovered by :Clyde W. Tombaugh
Discovery date :February 18, 1930

1- Pluto is so small that it is only about half the width of the United States. This is the reason why some scientists call it " The Dwarf Planet "

2- Pluto and its moon, Charon are locked so that they always face each other with the same side.

3- A radio signal from Pluto will take more than five hours to reach Earth.

4- Pluto is smaller than seven sattelites of the Solar System, including the Moon.

5- If you lived on Pluto, you had have to live 248 Earth years to celebrate your first birthday in Pluto-years.

6- If you weigh 100 pounds on Earth, you would weigh only 7 pounds on the planet Pluto!

7- A Pluto's moon Charon is about half the size of Pluto. Charon is the largest moon compared to its planet of any moon in the solar system.

8- Pluto isn’t a planet any more, but it’s still a very interesting “dwarf planet” in the Solar System, worthy of our fascination and interest.

9- With this change, there are now only eight planets. Also because of this change, there is a new category of small planets known as plutoids.

Why Venus the hottest planet and not Mercury ?

Venus —The Hottest and Brightest Planet in the Solar System

"Despite being closest to the sun, Mercury is not the hottest planet. The hottest planet is Venus (at 462 Celsius)"

1- It’s not that Mercury isn’t hot. It’s plenty hot. If you were standing on the equator of Mercury at noon, the temperature rises to 700 kelvin (427° C or 800° F).

2- Even at the poles, the temperature is 380 kelvin.

3- But the moment you enter night on Mercury, the temperatures drop down to just 100 kelvin. That’s the same as -173° C.

4- The reason Mercury can get so hot in the day and then so cold at night is because it doesn’t have an atmosphere to trap the heat from the Sun.

5- And when it comes to an atmosphere, Venus has the thickest one in the Solar System.

6- The atmosphere on Venus is so thick that you would experience 93 times the pressure you’d experience at sea level on Earth. You’d have to dive down a kilometer under the ocean to experience that kind of pressure on Earth.

7- Furthermore, these atmosphere is almost entirely carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that’s great at trapping heat from the Sun.

8- The average temperature on Venus is 735 kelvin (461° C, or 863° F).

9- Furthermore, it’s the same temperature everywhere across the planet, whether it’s day or night.

10- The thick atmosphere on Venus traps the heat from the Sun, and the weather distributes this temperature around the entire planet. No matter where you went, you’d always experience that same 735 kelvin temperature.

11- And that’s why Venus is hotter than Mercury.

Protostar Discovery !

Seven hundred and fifty light-years from Earth, a young, sunlike star has been found with jets that blast epic quantities of water into interstellar space, shooting out droplets that move faster than a speeding bullet.

The discovery suggests that protostars may be seeding the universe with water. These stellar embryos shoot jets of material from their north and south poles as their growth is fed by infalling dust that circles the bodies in vast disks

How much would you weigh on Mercury ?

To figure out how much you'd weigh on another planet, multiply your weight on Earth by the gravitational pull listed in the table below.

Example :
I weigh 90 pounds on Earth.
On Mercury, I would weigh:
90 pounds x 0.38 = 34.2 pounds.

Planet - Gravitational pull(compared to Earth)
Mercury - 0.38
Venus - 0.91
Earth - 1.00
Mars - 0.38
Jupiter - 2.54
Saturn - 0.93
Uranus - 0.80
Neptune - 1.20

Aliens !

EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE is defined as life that does not originate from Earth. Referred to as alien life, or simply aliens, these hypothetical forms of life range from simple bacteria-like organisms to beings far more advanced than humans. The development and testing of theories about extraterrestrial life is known as exobiology.

Alien life, such as bacteria, has been theorized to exist in the Solar System and quite possibly throughout the Universe.According to this argument, supported by scientists such as Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking, it would be improbable for life not to exist somewhere other than Earth because our universe is so much vast with so many galaxies and millions of solar systems and billions of planets !!!

★ The Milky Way is spinning at a rate of 225 kilometers per second.

★ In addition, the galaxy is travelling through space at the rate of 305 kilometers per second.

★ This means that we are traveling at a total speed of 530 kilometers (330 miles) per second.

★ That means that in one minute you are about 19 thousand kilometers away from where you were.

★ Scientists do not all agree on the speed with which the Milky Way is travelling – estimates range from 130 – 1,000 km/s.

THE EYE OF GOD

——THE EYE OF GOD——

Analysis: This is an authentic photograph taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. It was featured on NASA's website as an Astronomy Picture of the Day in May 2003 and thereafter reproduced on a number of websites under the title "The Eye of God" (though I have found no evidence that NASA has ever referred to it as such). The awe-inspiring image has also been featured on magazine covers and in articles about space imagery.

What it actually depicts is the so-called Helix Nebula, described by astronomers as "a trillion-mile-long tunnel of glowing gases." At its center is dying star which has ejected masses of dust and gas to form tentacle-like filaments stretching toward an outer rim composed of the same material. Our own sun may look like this in several billion years.
