The Rubik's Cube wasn't invented as a puzzle toy, but as a engineering project!

The man who invented it was Ernő Rubik from Budapest, Hungary. He worked at the department of interior design at the Academy of Applied Arts and Crafts.

His purpose for the cube was solving the structural problem of moving the parts independently without the entire mechanism falling apart. It wasn’t until he scrambled the cube that he realized he had invented a puzzle. The first few batches of the cube where launched in 1977 in toy stores in Budapest.

By 1982, 100 million cubes were sold worldwide.
